Magnetic Paint

TO PURCHASE:
See the listing of retailers at the bottom of each product page.

With Resene Magnetic Paint you can turn your wall into a display feature.  Resene Magnetic Magic is not magnetic itself but is magnetic receptive.  It is not at all harmful to humans in the room.  It is loaded with iron oxides for maximum magnetic effect. Once the topcoat has cured you can put up your Fridge Frames other flat magnetic vinyl products or rare earth magnet products.  You can put up posters, notices, letters, memorabilia, etcetera using magnetic strips over their corners or tops (we can supply these) or with Sticky Bits (adhesive backed magnetic rectangles) stuck to their backs.  With magnetic strips there is nothing adhesive and everything is easily changed. All this without damaging your walls.  Ideal for homes, offices and schools.

Resene Magnetic Paint is silver/grey in colour.  You simply paint the colour of your choice over the Magnetic Paint.  This presents you with several options:

  • Option 1:  Coat an entire wall or room with two coats of Magnetic Paint then paint your normal waterbased  paint over the top.  This way your entire room or wall is magnetic receptive and you can put fridge magnets or magnetic photo frames anywhere.  In years to come, you can re-arrange your display.  To turn your room back to normal simply remove all the magnets and your room will look like any other.

  • Option 2:  Coat a rectangle, other shape or specific area with two coats of Magnetic Paint then paint your entire wall or room with normal waterbased paint over the top.  Only the area you first painted with Magnetic Paint will be magnetic receptive.  Again , to  turn your room back to normal simply remove all the magnets and your room will look like any other.  This option will save you some funds as you won’t need much Magnetic Paint.

  • Option 3:  Coat a rectangle, other shape or specific area with two coats of Magnetic Paint then paint just that area with normal waterbased paint over the top.  You can paint the same colour as the rest of the wall or a different colour to make a feature (as pictured here -->>).

Prepare the surface as you would normally ..  with a primer for new plasterboard, or simply sugar soap washing previously painted walls.  Apply Resene Magnetic Magic in two smooth coats and topcoat in whichever colour you choose with any waterbased interior house paint.

It's easy to turn any surface into a magnetic masterpiece. Prepare and prime the surface. Apply Resene Magnetic Magic in two smooth coats by brush, hi-solids roller or spray. While it can be applied in one coat, it may be difficult to apply a sufficiently thick coating with a single application. Roller application will result in a slight orange peel effect. The smoother the finish and the thicker the application, the stronger the magnetic effect will be.

To avoid visible coating thickness differences between magnetic and non-magnetic areas, it is recommended that a complete wall or area be coated or that the edge of the magnetic area be decorated or framed to clearly delineate the available magnetic area.

Topcoat Resene Magnetic Magic in two coats of the standard acrylic topcoat of your choice. Resene Magnetic Magic is designed to be overcoated and may become damaged if used as a magnetic board without topcoat protection.

Resene Magnetic Magic is ideal for use in all interior areas where a magnetic area is required to affix magnets. The inclusion of iron oxides means that the product is extremely heavy for its volume, so all product is packed into a 1L can size for ease of handling.

  • Do not apply at temperatures below 10°C or when it is liable to drop below 10°C during the drying period.
  • Not designed for use in wet areas or exterior situations.
  • Must be overcoated prior to use as a magnetic board.

Typical Uses:

Smooth, non-textured interior areas where it is desired to affix magnets

Surface preparation:

Ensure surfaces to be painted are in sound condition, thoroughly sanded to a smooth finish, dry, free from dirt, dust, and loose material. If mould is present, treat with a mould killer.

Priming:

Fibre board, particle board paperfaced plasterboard, fibrous plaster and their stoppings should be primed

Hardboard must be sealed to promote flow of the topcoats.

Some ‘soft’ paperfaced plasterboard preparatory products and undercured gypsum based stoppings may not be suitable basecoats for painting under stressed conditions.

Sound fibre cement surfaces do not normally require a primer. Spot prime any nailheads

Repaints - spot prime all bare areas with the same  primer shown for new work and proceed as for new work.

Application:

Prepare and prime surface. Apply Resene Magnetic Magic in smooth full coats by brush, hi-solids roller or spray. Additional coats and a very  smooth surface will result in a stronger magnetic effect. A minimum of 150 microns (two coats, each at 6 square metres per litre) is required. Roller application will result in a slight orange peel effect.

To avoid visible coating thickness differences between magnetic and non-magnetic areas, it is recommended that a complete wall or area be coated or that the edge of the magnetic area be decorated or framed to clearly delineate the available magnetic area.

Topcoat Resene Magnetic Magic in two coats of a standard waterbased topcoat of your choice.

There is no need to sand Resene Magnetic Magic between coats.

Precautions:

All sanding dusts may be harmful and appropriate protection should be worn. In particular dusts from old lead or chromate based paints or old building materials containing asbestos may be injurious to health if inhaled or ingested. Seek expert advice if the presence of these materials is suspected.

Maintain good ventilation throughout the drying and curing period to ensure the paint is properly cured.  Poor ventilation may inhibit curing and performance.
